Long ago o lets just say about one hundred million years ago, a volcano erupted in the ring of fire. What life forms living of Earth hadn’t realized the molten lava spurring from the volcano will cause two little rocks a huge adventure. After millions and millions of years the molten lava started to cool and crystallize, but they were cooling and crystallizing slowly. The molten lava first cooled and crystallized to blackness, then broke into two slabs of lava about the size of a ball. The two slabs finally cooled and crystallized, and one piece of lava turned to an Obsidian rock and one slab of lava turned into a Basalt rock.
The Basalt and Obsidian were born, but what they didn’t realize was that they were going to get reborn, well sort of. “Wow, what is this amazing land?” The Basalt questioned. “I don’t know, but it’s beautiful.” Obsidian was suddenly interrupted by a clap of thunder so loud it would have made a human deaf. The clap of thunder was then followed by large raindrops. But, soon later mud fell from a nearby hill. This part is called erosion. The rocks were soon starting to slowly change. He rocks started to change and break up into little pieces, but as I said slowly. The next process the two rocks were going through was happening slowly and would take several million years. So one piece of the rock started to brake and then the other.
The years pasted by and the rocks got broken up into small pieces of rocks called sediments. The rocks had broken up into pieces and now were on top of the dirt. Sediment can be found in dirt, river water, lake water, etc. But, anyways the sediments of the two igneous rocks remained on the dirt.
The sediments remained in the dirt. But, the sediments started to slowly transport them selves underground moving about an inch every one hundred years. After millions of years the sediments were underground several feet. The sediments were covered by so much dirt and water they started to compact. The sediments compacted after several million years. But then they started to cement together. After millions of years the sediments cemented together to become two Sedimentary rocks. The Obsidian had become limestone and the Basalt became Coal. “I feel new and better than ever!” The limestone exclaimed. “I feel the same way! Except a little dirty.” Coal exclaimed with a chuckle. The two Sedimentary rocks were so happy to be a rock again he screamed for joy. “Yes! Were rocks again!” They both exclaimed. But, soon the rocks felt like they had ten million tons of pressure of them and the million degrees Celsius of heat in their faces. What the rocks hadn’t realized was they were feeling was the sequence in the rock cycle called heat and pressure and they wouldn’t be Sedimentary rocks anymore after millions of years.
The millions of years passed by and the rocks changed. The rocks turned to a type of rock called a metamorphic rock. Which is a rock that is subjected to change. Anyways, the limestone became Slate and the Coal changed to Gneiss. The rocks were now morphed in to metamorphic rocks, which made them feel ecstatic. “I feel even better then before!” The Slate exclaimed. But, then they began to feel and small a fire small. They were starting to melt. The rocks just sat there for millions of years. They remained there just melting in molten rock. Soon half of their mineralized bodies were melted into magma. But, after millions of years, the rocks were no longer rocks but molten hot magma.
The magma remained underground unable to leak through a crack in the ground or erupt from a volcano. But, the magma started to cool and crystallize. The magma slowly started to change into intrusive igneous rocks. The magma remained cooling and crystallizing into two intrusive igneous rocks. The magma was halfway done cooling and crystallizing after several million years. But, millions of years later the magma was now two igneous rocks. The Slate was now Granite and the Gneiss was now Gabbro. They thought it couldn’t get any better now that they are igneous rocks. But, then they felt a shake in the ground and magma bubbling up.
After a couple months, the rocks were sent sky rocketing through a magma leading to a magma chamber in a volcano about half a mile long. “Boy what a RUSH!” The Gabbro remarked. “You got that right!” Granite blurted out then the rocks saw a blinding bright light above them. The two rocks then found themselves in mid air followed by large amounts of molten rock and lava. The rocks remembered the volcano by its slanted top and cone like shape. They had realized that the volcano was their birth place and also the volcano.” Looks like were starting all over in the rock cycle!” Gabbro remarked with a chuckle. “Were in our birth place again and it only toke hundreds of millions of years.
THE END
This story about two rocks that go through the whole cycle even though it takes hundreds of years but I just will be fast forwarded little bit. The two rocks go all the way through this but don’t know what they are doing/going through but when they get back to where they were born they finally find out.
